Excerpt from "Pyramid Atlantic exhibit reads like an open book" by Nancy Ungar, The Gazette, April 18, 2001. Review of exhibit "Books Speak: Out of the Mainstream" at Montgomery College, Takoma Park, Maryland
"Shireen Modak Holman's Memories of My Father is a traditionally shaped book that tells its story largely through the artist's colorful drawings. Opening the book is like opening the door to a middle class living room with a large picture window view of mountains. A very small book hangs by a thread from the top of the picture and contains the larger book's text. It tells us that Holman's father 'immigrated from India to the United States where he spent the last 30 years of his life.' Two pockets in the book and one on the outside of the cover contain folded drawings of the objects that evoke Holman's memories.....Perusing this large, colorful and personal book is like holding Holman's past in our hands.....Some of the work, like Holman's Stream of Life.....recalls 19th and 20th century European books that combined poetry with graphics."
Excerpt from "At Women in the Arts, Books of a Different Feather" by Nicole Lewis, The Washington Post, August 27, 1998. Review of exhibit "Book as Art X" at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington D.C.
"Although [Krystyna] Wasserman tries not to repeat artists in her shows, she made an exception this year for Shireen Modak Holman of Montgomery Village. Holman created her book of woodcuts on handmade paper as a homage to her father, who died recently. She combines elements of his life in America and India, including images of his beige couch and a copy of the newspaper India Abroad."
Excerpt from "The Book: Story & Structure" Introduction to catalogue for exhibit "The Book: Story & Structure" by William P. Heidrich, 1997.
"Stream of Life, another work recently published by Pyramid Atlantic, structurally extends well beyond our conventional sense of the book form. Conceived and illustrated by Shireen Holman with poems by Tom Galt, the self-conscious shaping and coloring of the book dramatically enhances our comprehension of the poems themselves. All parts of this work interact to create an experience greater than the individual parts."
Excerpt from "NMWA makes book on women's art" by Nancy Ungar, The Gazette, August 28, 1996. Review of exhibit "Book as Art VIII" at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington D.C.
"Shireen Holman....[has] used poetry by others as take-off points for [her] art. Holman's Stream of Life with poetry by her cousin Tom Galt, uses simplified realism and deep, rich colors to reflect the difficult passage from her childhood in [India] to her adulthood in America. The book takes the shape of an Indian houseboat (for the journey of life) and the borders contain the fluid script of [Marathi], the native language of [Maharashtra]."
