Les Alyscamps I, Monotype, 2002, 20" x 24"

These three prints are of Les Alyscamps in Arles, France. My husband and I visited France in the summer of 2001, and spent a lot of time exploring the ancient Roman sites in Provence. Les Alyscamps was a necropolis, started by the Romans and later taken over by Christians. The sarcophagi are now all empty, some of them in ruins, but many still relatively intact. At the end of the avenue of sarcophagi is a medieval church, dark and damp, and filled with cobwebs.
